RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN Companion Animal Medicine (CAM)

Program Information

The residency is a 3-year, non-degree program. The residency starts on July 1st. The residency provides in-depth small animal medicine training that permits individuals to pursue a career in either private practice or an academic setting. The program meets all requirements of the Chinese Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA); during this time the resident must produce at least 1 manuscript that is accepted for publication in an appropriate journal to get a resident certificate.

There are two services (small animal surgery, internal medicine) in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Zhejiang University (VMTH.ZJU). A service consists of the faculty member, one or two residents, and sometimes 1-2 senior veterinary students. Residents actively participate in client interviews, physical examinations, interpretation of diagnostic procedures and the appropriate treatments. The findings and interpretations of the resident are evaluated and extended by consultation with faculty Veterinarians, and with residents and faculty from the other support services.

Small animal medical experience is extensive in this program. At first the resident assists or operates under direct supervision; later primary responsibility is gradually transferred to the resident. Clinical experience is supported by participation in service rounds as well as by attending clinical rounds in medicine, radiology, Oncology, pathology and anesthesiology, etc.

During the program, approximately 70 percent of time is devoted to clinical training and service, while approximately 30 percent is spent in academic pursuits, including research and didactic teaching opportunities. During clinical training periods each resident is supervised by the chief of the service to which the resident is assigned. One research project must be completed and submitted for publication prior to completion of the third year. Short-term controlled research projects are encouraged, as well as quality prospective and retrospective clinical research activities. Funding is available to support resident research projects; however, application to extramural sources is strongly encouraged to develop expertise in preparing effective grant-writing skills.

Opportunities

The VMTH.ZJU will provide support for travel to a meeting at least once a year. Residents that are presenting research will get priority in attending the meetings they request.

Residents have the chance to attend the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Zhejiang University -- Chung Hsing University joint visiting scholarship program (Taiwan; 6 to 12 months clinical training program).
