The College of Animal Sciences at Zhejiang University has become one of the first-class academic institutions of the field in China since it was founded more than 90 years ago. The College is now a major leader in the advancement of new discoveries in the areas of animal production and health, sustainable animal agriculture, safe foods of animal origin and etc. The College is dedicated to train students to achieve excellence in their scientific studies and scientific research activities. The College also actively serves the national economic development by providing technique consultancy and new technique transfer.
There are three scientific discipline departments in the College: Department of Animal Science & Technology, Department of Veterinary Medicine, and Department of Sericulture, Aquaculture & Apiculture. Based on the scientific research areas, the College grouped the faculty staff into six research institutes: Institute of Feed Sciences, Institute of Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Institute of Dairy Science, Institute of Applied Bio-Resources, Institute of Sericulture & Apiculture, and Institute of Animal Breeding, Husbandry & Environmental Engineering.
There are 139 faculty staffs in the College, including one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 33 professors, 40 associate professors and 16 post-doctoral researchers. The total enrollment of undergraduates and graduates presently is 535, including 169 undergraduates, 222 MS candidates, 136 PhD candidates, and 8 foreign students studying for MS or PhD.
The undergraduate education program in the College includes disciplines in Animal Science & Technology, Bio-Resource Sciences (focusing on organisms of major economic importance such as sericulture, aquaculture and apiculture), and Veterinary Medicine. Graduate study programs (both MS and PhD programs) are offered in Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Sericulture, Aquaculture and Apiculture, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Food Science, and Preventive Veterinary Medicine. The disciplines Basic Veterinary Science, Clinical Veterinary Medicine and Aquaculture offer graduate studies for Master’s degree. The college has also nurtured more than 6000 professionals in various fields.
The outstanding scientific research in the College has earned high recognition. A total of 49 awards for scientific and educational achievements have been granted to our faculty members, including two 2nd Class Awards of the Chinese National Scientific and Technological Advancements, and two 2nd Class Chinese National Educational Awards. Sericulture is ranked as the National Key Discipline nationwide. Animal Nutrition & Feed Science and Preventive Veterinary Medicine are the other two key disciplines at the provincial and ministry levels. The Laboratory of Bio-Feed Safety and Pollution-Control is named as the National Engineering Laboratory. Molecular Animal Nutrition is named as the key laboratory by the Ministry of Education, and Animal Nutrition and Feed Science Laboratory and Animal Disease Pathogen and Immunity Control Laboratory are both named as the key laboratory by the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Preventive Veterinary Medicine Laboratory as the key laboratory by Zhejiang Province.
The College is well-equipped for basic research in molecular cell biological fields as well as for applied research in animal science and veterinary medicine. The volume of equipment in the college laboratories amounts to a total value of 6 million US dollar. We also founded feed-industry platform which employs new technology, manufactures new products and delivers new services within Zhejiang Province.
