Animal Nutrition and Feed Science discipline of Zhejiang University has a long history. It Started to offer Master degree early in 1996 and Doctor degree in 2000. This discipline was approved as the key discipline by Ministry of Agriculture in 2000, Zhejiang provincial key discipline in 2005, the national key discipline (foster) in 2007. Research fields include biotechnology & animal nutrition, gene engineering on feed additives, nutrition and gene expression, bio-feed additives & nutritional manipulation, efficient utilization of feed resources, and cover monogastric animal, ruminant and poultry.
There are 33 faculty and staff members, including 13 professors and 13 associate professors. The faculty is honored to have one professor of the ‘Qiu Shi Program’ organized by Zhejiang University, and two recipients of the ‘National Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars of China’. The faculty also has one professor earned the title of ‘Young and Middle-aged Experts Who Made Outstanding Contributions to Zhejiang Province’, three entered the ‘Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University’ initiated by the Ministry of Education and five for “151” Talent Project organized by Zhejiang Province.
The discipline has applied for more than 70 key projects during recent years, including National 973 Program and 863 Program, National Research and Development Programs, National Natural Science Foundations, international Cooperative Research Programs and local governments and enterprises. The discipline has attained around 136 million RMB research funds. In the past years, the discipline was awarded 25 State and Province Sci-Tech progressing prizes, and there were more than 1000 publications issued and 79 patents, including 250 articles cited by SCI.
Two hundred and two graduate students graduated for Master degree and 128 for Ph D degree from this discipline. Currently, 118 graduate students including 69 Master candidates and 49 Ph D candidates are pursuing for their degree. One Doctoral thesis was awarded as one of the National One-hundred Excellent Doctoral dissertations in 2007.
Thediscipline is equipped with advanced facilities with total asset of 50 million RMB. Eight national and provincial research and teaching platforms have been established. The Laboratory of Bio-Feed Safety and Pollution-Control is named as the National Engineering Laboratory. Molecular Animal Nutrition is named as the key laboratory by the Ministry of Education, and Animal Nutrition and Feed Science Laboratory is named as the key laboratory by the Ministry of Agriculture and Zhejiang Province. Scientific products of this discipline have been used more than 230 enterprises over 24 provinces and cities, and the production value is over 15 billion RMB.
