Department of Animal Medical Sciences was established in 1934, evolved from the Department of Agricultural Zoology, National Zhejiang University. After the national adjustment of colleges in 1952, the department was integrated into some agricultural universities such as Nanjing Agricultural University etc. In 1960, the department returned to recruit students.

The department covers 3 of the second science subjects: basic veterinary, preventive veterinary and clinical veterinary. All of the subjects were authorized to award the Master Degree, among which the preventive veterinary subject has right to award the Doctor Degree. Twenty two staff members in the department include 5 professors, 10 associated professors and 6 lecturers, in which there are 10 master supervisors and 4 doctor supervisors, 7 persons possessing the Doctor Degree.

The basic veterinary, preventive veterinary and clinical veterinary groups are the main teaching institutions in the department. It consists of five laboratories belonging to the College Laboratory Center: animal anatomy lab, physiology lab, micro-morphology lab, microbiology and immunology lab and clinical veterinary lab, an animal hospital of Zhejiang University, and more than ten of .teaching practice bases outside. The research institutions are the Institute of Preventive Veterinary Medicine and the Institute of Dairy Sciences (co-constructed with other department), Zhejiang University.

The department sets one specialty of animal medical sciences for Bachelor Degree, which belongs to the second class of science with a requirement of 4-year study. The main goal is to educate the undergraduate students to grasp the basic theory, knowledge and skills of animal science. The graduated students are expected to be the adaptive, versatile and talented specialists in animal science, and capability of engaging the related works in broad fields of animal researches and production, such as veterinarian, teacher, researcher, administrator, and quarantine inspector etc.

The subject of preventive veterinary for doctor degree contains the following research fields: animal immunology and disease control, animal virology and biotechnology, and etiology and control of zoonoses. The subjects and fields for master degree include development of reproductive stem cell of livestock and poultry, molecular veterinary pharmacology, and regulation of animal gene expression and lactation in the basic veterinary subject, microbiology and immunology, applied biotechnology, animal epidemiology, and biosafety of animal product in the preventive veterinary subject, and natural drug and animal disease control, animal disease on propagation and its control, and clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetic in the clinical veterinary subject.

To date, the department carries out national and provincial key research projects in many fields, including mechanism of livestock and poultry reproduction, functional regulation of animal cells, molecular veterinary pharmacology, expression of animal genes, animal etiology, biosafety of animal products, animal immunological engineering, prevention, quarantine and control of animal infectious disease (containing zoonoses), diagnosis and treatment of small animals, and development and application of the natural drugs, etc. The researches in the fields of regulation on animal reproduction, biosafety of animal products, animal etiology and immunology, prevention and control of cow disease, and natural drugs and animal disease control reach a much higher level.

The department regards the external communication as a very important issue. It has established wide communication and cooperation with many famous universities and research institutions in America, Japan, Finland, Sweden, as well as the domestic ones.

The department keeps developing at high speed with the faculty’s hard working for several years. The total fund and projects of researches, number of the SCI article, as well as the quantity and quality of graduate students are increasing greatly recent year.

All of the staff is being of one mind and working hard to make the department better and stronger.
