Introduction:

ZhejiangUniversity is located in Historical city of Hangzhou famous for its rich culture and scenic beauty in other words called as "Paradise on Earth".

The department was established in 1927 as sericulture department and gradually emerged as today’s Department of "Economic Zoology" which includes the subjects Sericulture, Apiculture and Aquaculture. This department was one of the first departments to offer undergraduate courses in Sericulture and admitting foreign students. The department is authorized by the state council to confer Masters and Doctoral degrees and also provides positions for Post Doctoral research also. Presently the department has National key discipline as "Rearing animals of Economic importance" which emphasizes on the subjects mentioned earlier. In addition the Department has a privilege of receiving grants from "211 projects" to strengthen the discipline and is a prestigious honor to receive grants amongst Chinese universities.

Presently  the department has 28 Faculty including 10 professors, 11 Associate professors and 7 Assistant professors among which 13 teachers have Doctoral degree and 6 are eligible to supervise Ph.D students and 15 to supervise graduate students. Presently 23 masters, 22 Doctoral, 30 senior foreign visiting scholars and one post doctoral student are enrolled in the department.

The department has two main Research Laboratories

1) Comparative molecular Biology Lab

2) Germplasm Bank and Molecular breeding lab

and two research centers specialized in

1)      applied biological resource  and material engineering

2)      Silkworm bye product utilization

And in addition one exhibition hall (Exhibiting Commercial hi-tech silkworm bye products.)

The instrumentation and Infrastructure of 10 million RMB has been installed in these centers which is used for both academic and research purposes.

Major fields of research include, gene functioning, genetic engineering, Research to provide technical support and quality evaluation to ensure high and efficient production, disease prevention and control, silkworm bye product utilization and commercial production of products. At present there are 40 on going projects funded by 'National science Foundation, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and other related industries and the total research fund is over 10 million RMB at present.

The department is actively engaged in overseas academic exchanges and scientific cooperation with foreign institutions. The department had hosted and organized first International conference on Sericulture in 1996 and has co-sponsored two other international academic conferences in 1997 and 2001, renowned Japanese professors Komi Masuo, Matsuda Yosio and Tanaka Yosimaru were invited as visiting professors as early as 1928.

Now the department has successfully established close cooperative relations with Institutions like "The sericulture research of Chinese academy of agricultural sciences, Shanghai Institute of Entomology of Chinese academia sinica, Tokyo university of technology and Agriculture Japan, KiuxiuUniversity of Japan, Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute of India, and also has cooperative research.
