Research Description:
Molecular breeding and molecular biology of mulberry. Mulberry is a very important economic plant. It is not only diet for silkworm but also materials for paper, food and pharmaceutical industry. It also can be fodder for cattle, poultry, etc. Introduce of exogenous gene is very important method for improving the quality of mulberry. We have introduced oryzacystatin and glycinin genes into mulberry successfully by biolistic and Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated method respectively. Now we are developing a mulberry somatic embryogenesis system at an attempt to use mulberry somatic embryos as more efficient transgenic explants for molecular biological research.
Leaf is mostly economic organ of mulberry. Isolation of leaf developmental gene in mulberry is of great significance. Twelve fragments have been successfully isolated from leaf morphological mutants and wild species. One was demonstrated to have the transpon sequence similar to that in maize and others to relate with the hydroxymethyltransferase gene (gly1) and hydroxylase gene subunit sequence. Further studies are undergoing to confirm it.
